36 farms nominated in the 8th edition of the Iberian Porc d’Or Awards

04th June 2024 - News

A total of 36 farms share the 68 nominations for the 8th edition of the Porc d'Or Awards, which will be held on 5th July in Córdoba. This is what the Agri-Food Research and Technology Institute (IRTA) has made known on its website.

On this occasion, the communities of Castilla y León and Extremadura are the ones that receive the greatest number of nominations based on the productive criteria of productive longevity (piglets weaned by low sow), live births and farrowing rate. Between them they account for 88% of the nominations in this edition, with the provinces of Badajoz, with 24 nominations, and Valladolid, with 16, being the ones with the highest number of nominations. For its part, Andalusia has four nominations, Castilla La Mancha with two and the Valencian Community with one nominated farm.

Five special awards

In this eighth edition of the Iberian Porc d'Or Awards, five special awards will also be awarded that recognize notable characteristics related to excellence in management, sustainability, biosafety, health and animal welfare. The nominated farms are being visited by a delegation of the jury, which will decide the winning farms of the precious Porc d’Or Ibérico Especial statuettes.

Iberian Porc d’Or Award with Diamond. Four farms have been nominated for the highest award of the contest: the Valdisierro farm of ICPOR Soria, located in Fresno de Cantespino (Segovia), and three farms of Agrocesa – Grupo Vall Companys, Hnos Rodríguez Ponce, Granja La Mejorada and Ibéricos Encinas, located in the towns of Castromonte (Valladolid), Olmedo (Valladolid) and Encinas de Abajo (Salamanca), respectively.

MAPA Porc d’Or Iberico Award for Sustainability. The prize awarded by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA) is also competed for by four farms: La Charneca of Grupo Santana Hernández in Usagre (Badajoz); Inga Food's Las Abiertas farm in Madrigalejo (Cáceres); and two farms of the ICPOR Soria company, Valdisierro farm and Ibéricos Valcorba, located in Fresno de Cantespino (Segovia) and Bahabón (Valladolid), respectively.

Iberian Porc d’Or Award for Outdoor Production. This award will go to one of the three nominated farms: El Moralejo and El Minguillo, both from the COVAP company and located in Villanueva de Córdoba (Córdoba), and the San Rafael farm from Explotación San Rafael in Aljucén (Badajoz).

Porc d’Or Iberico One Health Award from CEVA. This year a new Special Award is introduced, the One Health Award from Ceva Salud Animal, main partner of the Porc d'Or Awards. This award seeks to recognize the joint work of farmers and veterinarians who implement innovative measures on their farms to improve animal health with the perspective of 'One Health'. Three farms are nominated in the first edition of this award: La Charneca and Ensanchá farms, both from Grupo Santana Hernández and located in Usagre (Badajoz) and Fuente de Cantos ( Badajoz); and the SRC Coto Gomeless farm of Sánchez Romero Carvajal located in Ronda (Málaga).

And, finally, the Iberian Porc d'Or Award for Productivity will go to the farm that, among all the categories, has the maximum number of piglets weaned per productive sow per year.
